Many people would never admit to another, let alone on a public forum that they are an addict. Furthermore, many spouses would never admit that they MARRIED an addict. It seems highly irresponsible on the outside looking in. It seems like you may be missing something in your life that caused you to turn to love a broken human being. It seems you are broken too. The truth is...
...we are all broken at some point in time.
And as we heal, we learn compassion for others. As we heal, we begin to heal our surroundings which sometimes includes those around us. This is what brings us here today...to this initial blog post. To this blog. You may be feeling crazy, hurt, lonely, lied to, devastated, angry, afraid, anxious…and all of these things at once. I have been in one of those spaces on many occasions.
However, we are joined together in the solitude and loneliness of being married to an addict. My husband's medication of choice is alcohol...vodka specifically. Did you catch that I called it "medication"? Before you judge, self-medicating comes in many forms: gambling, shopping, eating, drinking, smoking, pill popping, drugging...it all counts in the same bucket.
This blog's intention is for me to release what has been pinned up inside for years. Because sometimes Al-Anon just doesn't cut it.
"...when we bring things out into the light, they lose their power over us." ~Courage To Change
There’s no magic “pill”.
The first question always seems to be: how can I stop him from drinking? The truth is simple: You can’t. There must be a willingness from the addict to want to make a conscious choice to stop or get help. Even then the battle is NEVER over. You both must be diligent enough to take care of your mind so that you re-learn the proper coping skills to life’s twists and turns. That part is inevitable.
What you can do is work on you. Get support, therapy, an ear to listen without judgement. We can learn so much from one another without ever giving a word of advice. We can heal ourselves most importantly by finally focusing on ourselves. If you are reading this and feeling like you are in the same space, I encourage you to follow my journey and glean from my experiences.
